The brushless motor is the fundamental mechanical difference from brush-motor cordless drills at comparable price points: brushless motors eliminate the carbon brushes that contact the commutator in brush-motor designs, which are the components that progressively wear and eventually fail as the brushes erode — the primary limitation on brush-motor service life in high-frequency use. Brushless designs instead use a permanent magnet rotor and electronically controlled commutation, producing faster power response, more consistent torque delivery across the speed range, and significantly longer motor service life than brush alternatives. The dual-speed gear switch selects between 0–400 RPM low-speed (high torque for driving larger fasteners and drilling dense materials) and 0–1,700 RPM high-speed (lower torque, for faster drilling in softer materials and driving smaller fasteners).
