The Smeg EGF03BLEU is the Black Glossy finish variant of the EGF03 50’s Style manual espresso machine with built-in grinder — identical in every technical specification to the other EGF03 colourways, but finished in the signature Smeg Black Glossy die-cast aluminium casing that pairs the retro-curved 50’s silhouette with a sleek, neutral kitchen-compatible aesthetic. It suits both the dedicated coffee corner and the all-black kitchen appliance lineup. The full EGF03 technical description follows.

The EGF03 is Smeg’s barista-grade home espresso machine with an integrated grinder — a single countertop unit that covers the full bean-to-cup workflow: whole beans go into the hopper, the built-in conical burr grinder doses directly into the portafilter, and the dual thermoblock system brews espresso and steams milk without the waiting time between circuits that single-boiler machines require.

The integrated stainless steel conical burr grinder is the machine’s defining feature relative to machines that require pre-ground coffee. Conical burrs produce a more consistent and uniform grind particle distribution than blade grinders, which directly affects extraction quality — uneven grind sizes cause the water to flow faster through the coarser particles and slower through the finer ones, resulting in simultaneously over-extracted (bitter) and under-extracted (sour) espresso in the same shot. The three grind settings — Superfine, Fine and Medium — cover the typical espresso range from very tight extraction (espresso ristretto, darker roasts) through standard espresso to slightly coarser for lighter roasts and longer extraction. The bean hopper holds 250g and uses a twist-lock system. Both single and double dose grinding are selectable from the main panel. The upper burr is removable for cleaning.

The dual thermoblock system maintains two separate heating circuits — one for the coffee brewing group (maintaining water at the correct espresso extraction temperature) and one for the steam circuit — so the steam wand is ready to froth milk immediately after pulling a shot, without the 30–90 second reheat wait that single-boiler machines require. The 20 bar coffee circuit pump handles extraction; the 15 bar steam circuit drives the professional stainless steel steam wand. The pressure gauge on the front panel provides real-time visual feedback on extraction pressure, allowing the user to verify that the shot is extracting in the correct 7–10 bar range at the group head — a feature that distinguishes the EGF03 from entry-level machines that offer no extraction monitoring.

Customisation depth is meaningful: 4 pre-infusion profiles (Short / Standard / Long / Progressive) allow control over the pre-infusion phase — the low-pressure pre-wetting of the coffee puck before full extraction pressure is applied, which affects how evenly water saturates the puck and therefore shot consistency. 4 extraction temperature settings (Low / Medium / Optimal / High) let the user match brewing temperature to roast level — lighter roasts often benefit from higher temperatures, darker roasts from lower. The professional 58mm portafilter is the industry standard diameter found in commercial espresso machines; it produces a larger, more even puck than smaller-diameter portafilters and is compatible with a wide range of aftermarket baskets, tampers and accessories. All four filter baskets are included: single-wall 1-cup and 2-cup (for experienced users with correctly ground and dosed espresso) and double-wall 1-cup and 2-cup pressurised (which are more forgiving with grind consistency and pre-ground coffee).

The 2.4L SAN water tank is removable from the front for easy refilling, with a visible water level indicator. Adjustable water hardness (Soft / Medium / Hard / Very Hard) calibrates the machine’s descaling intervals to local water quality; a decalcification alarm and empty tank alarm are both included. The passive stainless steel cup warmer on top of the machine keeps espresso cups at serving temperature. Stand-by activates at 10, 30, 40 or 60 minutes (user-selectable) at 0.4W standby consumption. Power 1650W, 220–240V / 50Hz, 1m cord, Schuko plug. Good Design Award 2023. Dimensions H443×W334×D430mm.
