The Bean Switch System is the engineering feature that defines the Rivelia in the De’Longhi automatic machine range and distinguishes it from every competitor at its price point: two fully sealed interchangeable bean hoppers, each holding 250g of beans, that can be swapped in and out of the machine without emptying the grinder or wasting beans. Most fully automatic machines use a single fixed hopper — switching bean types requires completely emptying the hopper and the grinder path before the new beans can be used, which wastes the residual beans in the grinder and makes switching between, for example, a morning espresso blend and an afternoon single-origin decaf a manual and wasteful process. The Rivelia’s Switch Mode uses the grinder to clear the internal path before the new hopper is engaged — either by producing a final coffee that uses the remaining beans in the grinder channel, or by grinding them through without brewing — so the transition between hoppers is clean and the first cup from the new hopper contains only the new beans without flavour contamination from the previous variety. Bean Adapt Technology takes the Bean Switch System further: the machine runs a guided visual setup sequence for each hopper when a new bean type is loaded, uses the grinder to analyse the bean density and then automatically calibrates and saves the optimal grind size, dose weight and water temperature for that specific bean — storing these settings independently for each hopper so the correct parameters are applied automatically every time that hopper is active, without the user needing to adjust settings manually after a switch. The 13-setting conical burr grinder spans from very fine espresso grind through coarser settings for milder lungo and americano extractions, with the Bean Adapt settings anchoring each hopper to its optimal position within those 13 points and the user retaining the ability to further adjust from that baseline.
The 3.5-inch full-touch colour display with animated UI is the Rivelia’s most distinguishing operational feature: not a monochrome icon display or a simple LED indicator panel, but a full-colour animated touchscreen with drink icons, animated preparation graphics and swipe navigation that the iF Design Award judges recognised in the dedicated User Interface category as ground-breaking for an appliance in this segment. The machine learns the user’s drink preferences across the day — which drinks are ordered at which times — and reorders the menu dynamically so the most likely drink for the current time of day appears first, reducing the navigation time between switching on and pressing the one-touch drink button. Four user profiles store individualised preferences for espresso strength, coffee length and milk density for each household member. The full 16-drink menu covers hot coffee (Espresso, Espresso Lungo, Long, Coffee, Americano), hot milk drinks (Cappuccino, Cappuccino Mix, Caffelatte, Latte Macchiato, Flat White, Cortado, Espresso Macchiato, Hot Milk), cold drinks (Iced Coffee, Iced Espresso, Iced Americano) — the three cold drinks built in to the standard menu — and Hot Water for the aroma function.
