The Dyson Airstrait HT03 in Ceramic Pink and Rose Gold is Dyson’s hair straightener that uses no hot plates — it dries and straightens hair simultaneously using precisely directed airflow alone, eliminating the extreme heat contact that conventional plate-based straighteners apply directly to the hair shaft. The fundamental difference from a standard flat iron is physical: a flat iron clamps two heated metal or ceramic plates against the hair at temperatures typically between 180°C and 230°C, applying direct heat and physical pressure to force the hair shaft into a straight shape — a process that denatures the keratin proteins in the hair and strips moisture over repeated use. The Airstrait replaces the plates with two arms that project heated, high-pressure airflow downwards at a 45° angle through the section of hair held between them, creating the aerodynamic tension needed to align and smooth the hair as the moisture simultaneously evaporates — straightening as it dries, with no plate contact and no extreme heat.
The Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor spins a 13-blade impeller at up to 106,000 RPM, propelling 11.9 litres of air through the device per second and generating up to 3.6 kPa of air pressure — the pressure level Dyson engineers determined as the threshold required to create enough airflow tension to physically straighten hair as it dries rather than simply blowing it dry. This is why the Airstrait can do what a hairdryer cannot: a standard hairdryer’s airflow lacks the directional precision and pressure to align the hair shaft; the Airstrait’s dual-arm channel concentrates that pressure into a focused, angled stream that acts on each section of hair like a tensioned guide.
Temperature precision is handled by glass bead thermistors located inside the arms of the device, which measure and regulate the airflow temperature up to 30 times per second — preventing the temperature spikes that cause heat damage during a styling session even as the motor delivers sustained high airflow. The device operates in two primary modes: Wet mode for taking freshly washed, towel-dried hair from damp to finished in one pass (three pre-set temperatures calibrated for wet-to-dry styling); and Dry mode for refreshing or touching up dry hair between washes (two temperature options, 250°F and 285°F / approximately 121°C and 140°C, plus an optional Boost mode for maximum styling impact). Negative ions are emitted to reduce static and frizz during styling.
The intuitive airflow sensor detects when hair is between the arms and automatically reduces airflow to a low idle when it is not — reducing noise and energy use during the pauses between passes without the user needing to manually adjust settings. Auto-pause activates after three seconds of inactivity, stopping airflow and resuming automatically when the device is moved. The arms lock together for pre-drying roots with the machine held like a hairdryer — then unlock for the section-by-section straightening pass. The LCD colour display shows current mode, airflow speed and temperature setting. With the arms locked, the Airstrait pre-dries the roots and builds volume from below; unlocked and working methodically around the head in sections, it straightens from mid-length to ends. A Cool mode at the end of the styling session sets the style in place by lowering the airflow temperature to help the hair bonds stabilise in their new configuration.
